Extractions
Maryland Tooth Extraction Services
A tooth extraction can be a welcome solution to mouth pain or discomfort, providing relief and helping protect your overall oral health. Removing a tooth is generally required because of tooth decay or disease, but there are other reasons a patient may need a tooth removed, including injury or trauma to the mouth, orthodontic treatment that requires room for teeth to move, weakened immune systems from cancer treatment or organ transplants that increase the risk of tooth infection, and wisdom teeth, the most common extraction. At Laurel Smile Design, Dr. Amna Choudhary and Dr. Sunny Choudhary and our Laurel, MD team are here to guide you through the process with care.
Our Approach to Your Care
Despite your best efforts, teeth sometimes need to be removed to protect your health. When we’ve discussed all other possibilities and you’ve decided on extraction, we’ll take every step to help you. Your well-being always takes priority in any treatment decision. Some patients prefer sedation to help with oral surgery, and we can include medicated options into your plan. Regardless, we take every measure to make even minor surgical procedures as comfortable as possible.
Tooth Extraction Preparation and Procedure
Teeth present varied levels of removal difficulty, but the Laurel Smile Design team takes pride in helping every patient get numb with modern anesthetics to start every procedure. Once anesthesia settles in, careful steps are taken with instruments designed to elevate your tooth out of place. There are two types of extractions we commonly perform:
Simple Extraction: Your dentist will loosen the tooth with a specially designed instrument before using forceps to remove it. This procedure is performed on a tooth that is visible in the mouth, unbroken, and not too brittle or infected to pull.
Surgical Extraction: Your dentist will make a small cut in the gum to remove the tooth. Depending on the severity of your condition, we may need to remove bone around the tooth or section it to remove it fully. This more complex procedure is used when a tooth hasn’t emerged above the gumline, has broken off at the gumline, or is too damaged for a simple extraction.
Specific instructions help you care for the area after your procedure, with prescriptions for any medications needed during the healing period.

Post-Extraction Care
After a tooth extraction, there are a few behaviors to avoid that will make recovery faster and less painful:
Avoid smoking or chewing tobacco.
Avoid chewing food directly in the area, and choose foods that don’t require much chewing in general.
Avoid drinking anything through a straw for the first couple of days.
Avoid aggressive rinsing of the area.
Avoid vigorous brushing and flossing of the area and the teeth directly next to the extracted tooth.
Avoiding these actions allows a blood clot to form where the tooth once was. This clot is integral to healing, preventing infection, and preventing a painful condition called dry socket, which occurs when the clot is dislodged too early, exposing the nerve and bone to air and food. This condition is easily avoided if you follow your dentist’s post-extraction instructions.
Planning for Missing Teeth
While we consider the short-term management of your care, we should also discuss your long-term plans for replacing missing teeth. Leaving a space is always an option, but spaces in your smile can create appearance and functional challenges that are important to consider. Teeth slowly shift or migrate into open spaces, and minimizing the instability of an unbalanced bite can save a number of complications later in life.
Although our primary goal is to help your teeth stay healthy and functional, we can guide you through an extraction when needed. Fortunately, your mouth can be restored back to health after tooth removal. Since teeth help nourish our bodies and support our confidence, we will help you find a game plan that fits your short and long-term goals.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tooth Extraction
Is a tooth extraction painful?
We use modern anesthetics to numb the area thoroughly before your procedure. Most patients experience only mild soreness during recovery, which we help manage with clear aftercare instructions.
How do I know if I need a simple or surgical extraction?
This depends on the tooth’s position and condition. During your exam, we’ll determine the safest, most effective approach for your specific situation.
Can I be sedated for my extraction?
Yes. We offer sedation options for patients who prefer extra help managing anxiety or discomfort during oral surgery.
Do I need to replace a tooth after it's extracted?
While leaving a space is an option, it can lead to shifting teeth and bite instability over time. We’ll discuss tooth replacement options, like implants, bridges, or dentures, that fit your goals.
What is dry socket, and how do I avoid it?
Dry socket occurs when the healing blood clot is dislodged too early, exposing the nerve and bone. Following your post-extraction instructions, like avoiding straws and smoking, helps prevent it.
